Birrieria Jalisco
This might in fact be our absolute favorite restaurants in La Paz, as we look forward to our weekly visit to Birrieria Jalisco all week long. Birria is a regional specialty from the center of Mexico, and their slow-cooked meat knows no equal. The birria can be served as a brothy soup, or dry, and every week, we share an order of dry birria. We each get 2-3 delicious tacos, and it comes accompanied by a little bowl of broth or consome. They also serve it in quesadilla form, and there are several beverages available – coffee, fruit juice and sodas. It is also conveniently located in front of the Whale Museum. If you go on the weekend, get there early because it fills up.
Maria California
For an indulgent breakfast experience offering an extensive menu ranging from chilaquiles to pancakes, make your way to Maria California. Nestled just a block away from the malecón and a few blocks from our office, this charming restaurant promises a unique culinary experience. I enthusiastically recommend trying the Enchiladas California filled with veggies— a lusciously creamy and flavorful dish that, after numerous tastings, has become my absolute favorite on their menu. With its casual, friendly ambiance and great food, this restaurant showcases the best of the local marine bounty. Indulge in a wide variety of dishes, from succulent fish tacos to perfectly grilled shrimp. Our tried and true choices are the Grilled Fish Fillet, and a combination of Aguachile Mixto (a VERY spicy, shrimp and scallop, type of ceviche) and Breaded Scallops, where the spicy juice of the aguachile is the perfect sauce for the scallop tacos. The vibrant flavors and casual seaside ambiance make dining at La Costa a memorable culinary experience. (Closed on Tuesdays.)
La Baja Crudas Mariskeria
La Baja Crudas Mariskeria is a very fun and delicious new discovery. “Cruda” is the Mexican word for hangover, so this is the place you come to fix your hangover. The ambiance is very much of the Sinaloa tradition, with regional music and cuisine. It serves seafood in a huge variety of ways, from sashimis to ceviches, from fish tacos to tuna tostadas, and it’s all delicious. We are especially fans of the Camarones Roca, battered and deep fried shrimp with a spicy mayo sauce, great for making tacos. (Closed on Mondays.)
Harker’s
For casual eating, artisanal beer and pizza enthusiasts, Harker’s is a must-visit. With its laid back ambiance, wide variety of beers on tap, and thin crust pizza, this pizzeria delivers the best slice in town. Each pizza is crafted with care, featuring a crispy thin crust, premium ingredients, and a perfect balance of flavors. Finally, for the very bold, they offer a chili oil that is divine. From traditional Margherita to our favorites, the Supreme and Veggie Delight, Harker’s serves up a great slice in the heart of La Paz. This is also a great place to catch some of La Paz’s stellar sunsets.
