Cool Season Delights: Rays, Turtles and More at Los Islotes (Nov-May)
Winter is one of the most awe-inspiring seasons at Espíritu Santo Island’s marine life. Watch humpback whales migrate into the region, often breaching offshore. Sea lions are highly active and playful, making snorkeling unforgettable, with water temperatures around 68–72°F (20–22°C), so wetsuits are common.
Mobula rays begin appearing from late spring (May-July peak), filtering plankton through fine gill rakers with spectacular breaches. Eagle rays glide over sandy bays nearby, vacuuming bivalves and crabs with underslung mouths before crushing them in powerful jaws. You’ll see them drift through rocky shallows, perfect for Espíritu Santo Island snorkeling.
Green sea turtles, IUCN vulnerable, graze seagrass meadows with shearing beaks. These mostly herbivorous giants migrate thousands of miles to nest on Baja beaches, with nesting occurring from July to November. Loggerhead turtles occasionally cruise by, snapping urchins as opportunistic omnivores. Mexico hosts 6 of the 7 marine turtle species worldwide.

Hot Season in the Marine Life of Espíritu Santo Island (Jun-Oct)
June through October brings warm, crystal-clear waters that make diving and snorkeling at their best, though most seasonal migrants like whale sharks, whales, and mobulas have left the area. During this hot season, activities focus on Espíritu Santo Island snorkeling and paddleboarding in calm, warm conditions.
Humpback whales linger offshore after winter calving, with some still present into early June. Their haunting underwater songs can carry for miles, and their dramatic 40-foot breaches are unforgettable to witness. Bottlenose dolphins are commonly seen year-round in the region, often racing alongside your boat, leaping through waves, and riding the bow with playful energy.
Sperm whales are extremely rare here and are only occasionally spotted surfacing after deep dives for squid at depths of more than 3,000 feet. Orcas are also rare and appear only from time to time in the Sea of Cortez. Blue whales, the gentle giants of the ocean, reaching up to 100 feet long, are similarly uncommon and tend to appear quietly without warning. Their immense size leaves a lasting impression when seen in the wild.
