2. Visit Gray Whales in Their Winter Grounds
In winter, when the cold northern winds set the Pacific waters churning, an extraordinary spectacle unfolds off the coast of Baja: the arrival of the Gray Whale. These leviathans complete one of the longest migrations of any mammal – from the frigid feeding grounds of the Bering and Chukchi Seas all the way to Baja California Sur.
By late December through early January, many begin arriving along Baja’s Pacific shorelines. Over the next several months – typically from January through March, sometimes extending into early April – the protected, warm lagoons and bays become bustling nurseries. Here, in sheltered waters like Magdalena Bay, San Ignacio Lagoon or Ojo de Liebre Lagoon, pregnant females give birth, nurse their calves, and rejuvenate for the next cycle.
For those of us based around La Paz, this is not a far-fetched dream but a very real possibility – just a couple of hours’ journey from the city, and you’re in the midst of this seasonal pilgrimage.

3. Kayak with Sea Turtles
It’s a quiet experience, drifting across a deserted bay and waiting for sea turtles to lift their heads above the surface for a single, unhurried breath. The moment is subtle and easily missed, yet deeply absorbing, the kind that gently slows your senses until you begin to notice everything around you. The soft dip of your paddle, the faint ripple of water against your kayak, and the distant call of birds all weave together into a calm, living soundscape.
Kayaking is an intimate way of exploring, placing you at water level where every movement feels closer and more meaningful. With no engine noise and no rush, you become part of the environment rather than a visitor passing through it. The stillness invites patience, and in that patience, the bay reveals itself
Our Sea Kayaking camp has a little of everything, and is simultaneously active and relaxing. Come, reconnect with Nature. Only on our Sea Kayaking Camp.

4. Swim with Mobulas
In the spring, the Sea of Cortez stirs back to life, and the ocean begins to fill with movement, sound, and anticipation. As the waters grow warmer, marine giants return – multiple species of whales, roaming pods of orcas, and playful dolphins all make appearances – but nothing quite prepares you for the arrival of the mobula rays. When they gather, they do so in breathtaking numbers, forming vast, flowing schools that seem to turn the sea itself into a living, moving tapestry.
Sliding into the water beside them is an experience that feels almost unreal. The rays glide past in silence, wings rising and falling like slow heartbeats, their motion both powerful and impossibly graceful. All around, the ocean feels alive, while nearby dolphins streak through the water, calves close at their sides, leaping and spinning back into the sea as if in celebration. It’s a moment that overwhelms the senses in the best way, leaving you suspended between awe and disbelief, certain you are witnessing something rare – an utterly one-of-a-kind experience.
Only on our spring Megafauna Safari Camp or Tour.

5. Swim with Whale Sharks
You might not expect majesty from a fish, but whale sharks possess it in quiet abundance. There is something deeply humbling about slipping into the water and finding yourself alongside the largest fish in the world, moving with an ease that seems to defy their immense size. They glide through the sea with an unhurried grace, sunlight dancing across their pale spots and stripes as they pass just beneath the surface, close enough for you to truly appreciate their staggering scale.
For a short and precious window each year, the waters of the Bay of La Paz become a gathering place for these gentle giants. Meeting them there is more than just snorkeling: it’s a rare chance to share space with a creature that feels almost otherworldly in its calm and quiet power. As you drift beside them, time seems to slow, and the moment stretches into something unforgettable. Awesome, in the truest sense of the word.
