Every year from fall to spring, the warm, plankton-rich waters of La Paz Bay attract a remarkable visitor: the juvenile whale shark, Earth’s largest fish. These gentle filter feeders gather in the shallow bay to feed, offering one of the most accessible and awe-inspiring wildlife encounters in the world.
On our small-group Whale Shark Tour, we begin at our office with a safety briefing and gear fitting before heading out by boat into the Whale Shark Protected Area. Along the way, our expert guides will introduce you to the fascinating biology and behavior of whale sharks, and how local winds and Gulf currents create ideal conditions for their arrival.
Once we spot a shark, you’ll receive clear instructions for entering the water safely. Then it’s your turn: swim alongside these giants in their natural habitat, marveling at their sheer size, grace, and calm presence.

Whale shark season in La Paz typically runs from October to April, with sightings peaking between November and February. We carefully choose our dates and times based on sea conditions and the best chances of successful, respectful encounters.

Swimming with whale sharks in La Paz is a privilege, and with that comes a unique set of rules designed to protect these gentle giants. The whale shark area is carefully regulated by the Mexican government and only 14 boats in different 4 time slots, are allowed inside. Each morning, tour operators are assigned turns. While we receive our requested slot about 95% of the time, occasionally we may be given a later time or, in rare cases, no turn at all. Should this happen, we will notify you as soon as assignments are released. For this reason, we kindly ask that you remain reachable by the contact information you provide when booking.
Weather is another important factor to keep in mind. The Bay of La Paz is subject to seasonal winds, and while we monitor conditions closely, strong gusts can create rough seas. Sometimes the tour can proceed with a bumpy ride, but in other cases the port authority may officially close the bay to boat traffic for safety reasons. We do our best to provide 2–3 days’ notice if bad weather is forecast, but changes can happen quickly.
These regulations and precautions may feel unusual, but they are what make La Paz one of the best places in the world where whale shark encounters remain truly sustainable. In winter and spring, water temperatures can range from 65–70°F (18–21°C). In the fall, expect temperatures of 75–85°F (24–29°C). Wetsuits help a lot!
