Celebrate life at Espiritu Santo Island, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. Relax with family or friends, enjoy delicious freshly made meals, Baja California wine, happy hour, snacks and more. Espiritu Santo Island has much to offer, from sandy beaches, to dramatic cliff faces and bird-filled mangroves. A great way to explore the island is by sea kayak. With so many different areas to explore and so many things to do, we offer the opportunity to fully experience the island, giving you the time to enjoy all there is to do and see.
Fall and Spring conditions in the Sea of Cortez make sea kayaking the best way to get to know this amazing spot. It allows us to get up close to the coastline, with its beautiful landscapes and wildlife. This flexible trip offers paddling protected coves, snorkeling coral reefs, hiking desert trails in this unique environment, or just sitting on the beach watching the sunset while you sip a cold margarita. As the days go by you’ll realize the island has become a part of you forever.
Our rendezvous is in La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, from where we’ll get to Espiritu Santo Island. Once there, you’ll find yourself in “the world’s aquarium” to quote Jacques Cousteau. From swimming with the biggest fish in the world, to gliding through the waters of the many bays of Espiritu Santo in kayaks, to snorkeling with the beguiling sea lions, we are delighted to take you on this adventure!
Your trip is book-ended with nights at one of the nicest hotels in La Paz, Hotel Catedral. For the other 4 nights and 5 days, immerse yourself in island life with a relaxed schedule. Every day, after a hearty breakfast, we will set off kayaking, exploring many bays and beaches on the way. In the afternoon, return to camp, put your feet up and reflect on the day while we serve you happy hour at sunset, followed by a delicious dinner.
A lot of work goes into setting up a camp like this, so leave all the work to the pros and just enjoy Nature for a while. It’s all around. Eco Migrations would love to share this magical spot with you. See you soon!

Highlights
Day 1
Travel to La Paz. Arrive at the lovely Cathedral Hotel, located in the very heart of La Paz, near all the best restaurants and shops in the city.
Day 2
Enjoy the complimentary breakfast at the Cathedral Hotel, and then we are off to our adventure. Meet at the Eco Migrations office to gear up, and then we board the skiff and set off for Espíritu Santo Island. We arrive at Bonanza Beach in time for the camp intro and lunch.
In the afternoon, we snorkel around the rocky reef right in front of camp to get everyone used to their gear and ready for tomorrow at Los Islotes. There’s a chance to see Stone Scorpionfish less than 10 meters from camp, lobsters, moray eels, and lots of fish.
Then it’s sun showers and a change of clothes for happy hour (margaritas and guacamole with chips), and dinner (BBQ chicken, scalloped potatoes and Cole slaw). Sometimes, if it’s dark enough, we do some star gazing. Jupiter’s moons are usually visible through binoculars and the stars can be amazing.
Day 3
Get up early for the sunrise and coffee, then it’s free time until breakfast at 8 (egg, pancakes and sausage). We’re going to need energy today because we’re going to Los Islotes. At about 9 we set off from camp towards the sea lion rookery. Once we arrive, we all get ready and slip into the water. It’s full of fish and lots of playful sea lion cubs. After the group has had their fill, we get back in the skiff, dry off and find a beach to warm up and eat lunch (chicken salad, tostadas and fruit for desert)
After lunch, we continue exploring and arrive at the frigate bird colony and the tidal pools. We spend some time exploring and walking around, then we get back to camp for happy hour (ceviche and beer), and dinner while we watch the sunset. We sit around for a while chatting, then head off to bed nice and early.
Day 4
After breakfast and the morning routine, we prepare for our kayak introduction. We spend a while getting everyone acquainted with the equipment, and how best to manage our sea kayaks, and then we set off for a two-hour paddle. We arrive at the southern tip of the island in time for lunch (tuna salad sandwiches, fruit and nuts) and if everyone is in the mood, we continue for another hour until we reach the beautiful beach of La Despensa.
Then, we load up the kayaks and head back to camp. After a bit of rest we have happy hour and dinner. After an active day and a relaxing afternoon, everyone is ready for bed early and the group breaks up around 9.
Day 5
We rise early and gather for coffee and sunrise, and after breakfast, head off for our final day of kayaking. We head to The Split, where Espíritu Santo and La Partida Islands separate. It’s beautiful and shallow, full of turtles and turquoise waters. We head north, kayaking around the edge of the island, watching the seabirds above and fish below. We arrive at a tiny little beach a few hours later, where our crew has already prepared lunch. Today its sandwiches, which taste like glory after our paddle.
We rest for a while, combing the beach and talking about all the little interesting tidbits we find. Then we head back to camp so everyone can have some free time. Some read, others walk the beach, meditate, take a nap or a swim… We gather for a final happy hour and dinner.
Day 6
We seize the morning to pack up our gear to load the skiffs after breakfast. We enjoy coffee and the sunrise, and then head off to our tasks until breakfast (chilaquiles, a fried egg and some beans). We all get ready and leave camp around 9:30. We have saved the best for last, and are heading to the whale shark viewing area for our 11:00am reservation.
Once we enter Whale Shark Refuge, we start navigating very slowly while searching for the animals from the skiff. We are looking for a faint shadow in the water, and depending on the conditions, it can be very tricky to spot. But we finally find one, and swiftly get the group organized and in the water. We do our best to ensure everyone sees the animal well, and if it’s possible we swim alongside it. It’s a stunningly beautiful animal as it moves effortlessly through the water while we gasp to keep up. It’s great fun and the group is in high spirits as we eventually make our way back to La Paz. It’s been great traveling together.
Night at Cathedral Hotel.
Day 7
Travel home or onward to further adventures. Safe travels!
We will meet at 8pm on Day 1 at Hotel Catedral to welcome you to La Paz. We will also give you some large red dry-bags. Please pack whatever you will need at camp in these red bags. They are much more convenient to transport than your luggage, and your luggage remains sand-free.
On Day 2, we will meet at 9am at Eco Migrations HQ

“We had an amazing time. The trip was outstanding. This is a company that is well organized company that is focused on safety. They offer top of the line equipment (wetsuits, dry bags, kayaks), very well equipped camp and it is obvious that all of their staff take pride in maintaining the equipment. Snorkeling with the sea lions exceeded my expectations, and my husband and I who are avid divers looked forward to diving with them. I could have done more than one dive on that site but we went to explore a shallow reef with huge schools of fish and many moray eels. Octopus were spotted on the shore snorkels. Erin had extensive knowledge of the plant and bird life on the island. We were fortunate to come a few weeks after a rain and everything was green and many plants were blooming. Early morning coffee watching the sun rise and late afternoon happy hour bracketed the day.
I highly recommend this trip. Spend 5 days connecting with nature!!.”
I highly recommend this outfit for camping, kayaking, snorkeling, or diving in Baja. Great staff, knowledgeable guides, conservation ethos, clear communication about logistics, delicious food, and fun experiences. Especially if you are a naturalist, or just have interest in local birds, plants, or undersea creatures, definitely choose Eco Migrations. The pelican case filled with wildlife guide books was a wonderful surprise.
Eco migrations may be smaller than other companies, but wow, I can’t imagine having better or more knowledgeable guides. We did a four-day trip with them, and were happy with the camping, the great cooking, the friendly staff… but what really impressed us all was the deep knowledge of (and respect for) the ecology of the area. Highly recommend them.
We had the great privilege of staying on Espirito Santo with Eco Migrations for 6 days! This was a life changing experience! We did not book a private trip but we had the great fortune of being the only two people who booked this trip. The Eco Migrations crew quickly became true friends. Erin, Rafi, and Fi work so hard to make the trip seamless and a memorable experience even though it was just the two of us! Fi’s cooking was incredible which is impressive for being a total dry camp! Erin’s enthusiasm and passion for the island and life was energizing! We had so many questions for her as she lead us on hikes, snorkel trips, and kayaking trips. She was happy to answer all of them the best that she could.
We swam with whale sharks, saw hump back whales, dolphins, sea turtles, swam and played with sea lion pups, and saw so many other birds and animals that I can not list them all. Jose is the man behind all of the magic. He helped me book our trip months before we arrived and was willing to answer any questions that I had before we even left home.
We hope to be able to return to do the Loreto to La Paz kayaking trip one day with this same crew. They are always close by no matter the activity so if something goes wrong or you are at all uncomfortable, you are able to just ride along with Rafi while the others can still explore.
If there is any question of who to book a trip with in La Paz, be it a day trip or longer, these folks are the kindest and most thoughtful group that you could hope for on an adventure!
Thank you all so much for all of the spoils and fun! We hope to see you again soon be it here in La Paz or at our home!
“I met Jose and Erin while spending 2 months in LaPaz and loved their passion for their work and environment. I went on 4 trips with them, from day trips to 3 days camping on Espiritu Island and each experience was above all expectations.
They, as well as all their staff paid great attention to details and safety while providing information on the fauna and marine life we encounter. I have seen more marine life around the island than anywhere else in the world, I highly recommend EcoMigrations to help you explore this piece of paradise.”
