From Fall to Spring, juvenile whale sharks gather in the shallow coastal waters of the La Paz Bay. The northerly winds push nutrient-rich waters from the Gulf of California into the shallow bay of La Paz where plankton blooms, creating an irresistible feeding site for these enigmatic, filter-feeding sharks. Whale sharks are fascinating animals, and we are excited to share everything we know about them with you.
After leaving La Paz, we take a short boat ride to the Whale Shark Protected Area, and start looking for the tell-tale signs of an animal swimming nearby. You will receive an introduction to the natural history of the sharks, and instructions for the experience at hand. It is a memorable experience to see the size and grace of these animals moving through the water as you swim alongside them. If possible, we take identification pictures of each shark to help with the population monitoring that goes on in the Bay.

Excellent whale shark expedition with highly competent and conservation-minded guides. We swam with several of these majestic creatures in our time together. The operators were very kind to store our bags in the shop before and during the tour, as we had checked out of our airbnb and didn’t want to leave everything in the car. Highly recommend.

Incredible Snorkel With Whale Sharks
“We went on a whale shark snorkel excursion with Jose from Eco Migrations and it was incredible! Jose was very quick to respond to my emails and requests before the excursion. The day of the excursion, Emer had all of the wetsuits and snorkel gear ready for us. On the excursion itself, Jose and our boat captain were GREAT! They got us so close to the whale shark, and Jose provided detailed instructions on how to get ready, jump in, and swim, swim, swim with the whale shark. Jose was in the water with us the entire time and made sure that we had a lot of opportunity to snorkel with the whale shark. Jose is a marine biologist who speaks impeccable English and is very knowledgeable about the whale sharks habits and territory. What an incredible excursion and well worth the money!!!
